Life has a way of putting us flat on our backs, whether through health crises, broken relationships, addiction, or our own failures. The real question is never whether we fall. It is what we do next. Proverbs 24:16 makes clear that the righteous may fall many times, yet they always rise again. The difference between a righteous person and a wicked one is not perfection. It is the response after the fall. The wicked stay down, wallowing in sin until it becomes comfortable. The righteous get back up through genuine repentance, which means turning away from what put them down and turning back toward God.
The reason the righteous can rise when others cannot is simple: they have God. Proverbs 15:29 tells us that God hears the prayers of the righteous, and Psalm 34:15 confirms that His eyes are on them and His ears are open to their cries. The Spirit of God living inside a believer means they are never lying on the ground alone. That same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is present and active in every person who belongs to God. Right standing with God does not require perfection. It simply means staying in a posture of turning toward Him, even after stumbling.
Confessing sin to a trusted person is also a critical part of healing. James 5:16 teaches that secret sin may be forgiven but is rarely healed until it is brought into the light. The person whose prayers carry real power is not the one who has never fallen. It is the one who has fallen, gotten back up, and kept chasing God. Jesus came not merely to rescue people from hell but to restore them to a living relationship with God, one that begins right now, not just in eternity. That means carrying the kingdom of God into everyday life and going after the people around us who are still on the ground.
